6 factors you should consider when searching for Indian schools in Singapore

Laying the perfect education foundation for students is essential in the 21st century where competition is stiff and no one wants to be left behind. Schools play a very important role in a child’s life especially for the ex-pat community who are looking for schools in a foreign country. In Singapore, the ex-pat Indian community, which transits through the country for a couple of years look for continuity in Indian education for their children. There are others, who plan longer stay in Singapore and look for better, long term options, with the right blend of international and Indian flavor.

Finding a good Indian school has become a top priority for these people. Singapore provides a lot of good options for Indian schools which are well-established and which offer an overall development of the child.

Here are six factors that you should consider while shortlisting Indian schools in Singapore

Regulatory Approval

The Council for Private Education or CPE is the regulatory body for the sector in Singapore. People should look for schools that are registered with CPE. Before selecting a school for your child, parents should also carry out a research process which would involve finding out more about the year of establishment of the school, the curriculum they follow, the activities the school conducts, their teaching method, teacher-student ratio, and how well the school is developed to cater to the children’s needs and growth.

Travel time and distance

While selecting a good Indian school, it should be made sure that the travel time of students while commuting to and from the school is limited. Singapore is a small city-state, but travel time between the north and south can take any time between one-and-half to two hours both ways by public transport and local commute. This can be tiring for the students. The distance should be minimized between the place you stay and the school. The time spent traveling should be less so that these valuable hours can be spent playing and development.

School Culture

Before selecting an Indian school, one should look for the mission and vision of the school. It is always advisable to visit the school once, meet the faculty members and principals to understand the school better. It is important for students to continue learning about their heritage and culture about the place they belong, even if they are studying abroad, so the Indian school should be able to cater to that need as well.

Child’s Interest

You should make sure that parents understand the inclinations of their child and ensure that the school is able to fulfill that. For example, if the child likes performing arts, parents should look for a school, like GIIS, that provides extensive facilities and events to encourage this skill. The school should have ample opportunities to ensure the overall development of the child.

Curriculum Offered

Indian schools offer different types of curriculum and it varies from school to school. Parents should evaluate schools and their curriculum before settling for one. The CBSE curriculum is offered by many Indian schools, like DPS and Yuvabharati, in Singapore which is preferential for most parents for education continuity for their child. But there are others like GIIS that offer multiple choice of curricula under one roof like CBSE, IB and IGCSE. This gives the students options to choose a curriculum that suits their learning style the best.

Academic Results

It is highly important to check the results of the school, that is, how well the students are performing in the school on an average. This can be easily assessed by checking the results of decisive board exams. The academic results help in establishing the focal point of education of the school and how well are they taught to the students. The results reflect the quality of teaching and overall giving a picture of how well the Indian schools are performing on foreign soil.

Thus, finding a good school becomes increasingly important to help your child excel in his or her career and settle for a better future.
