How to Fix Smelly Clothes

You do your laundry with the intention of removing stains and smells from your clothes. But sometimes even after using the best detergents and products to get rid of the most stubborn stains and odors, your clothes still smell musty and damp after washing.

Sometimes the smell can be unpleasant and makes you feel like you are wearing it wherever you go; it can frustrate anyone. Sometimes the issue could be the amount of detergent, the length of the wash and rinse cycles, or not using hot or cold water properly.

But there might be other issues that can make your clothes smell. Let’s look at these issues and consider different ways to resolve them.

Leaving the clothes in the washer for a long time.
When you leave wet clothes in the washing machine for a long time, it’s the perfect environment for mildew, mold, and bacteria to grow. These can build up on fabrics and leave a permanent odor and sometimes even stains on clothes.

It’s best to set a timer to alert you when your wash cycle is completed to prevent leaving clothes in the wash far longer than you want to. In some instances you can use a solution like EC3 laundry additive to prevent mold and mildew from growing.

Add EC3 laundry additive during the wash cycle and allow the natural ingredients to penetrate and remove stains and smells from clothes. The same solution can also prevent mold and mildew from growing in your washing machine.

Your washing machine has a build up of mold, mildew, and bacteria.
The longer you use a washing machine, the more likely it is that it has a build up of mold, mildew or bacteria in the drum walls or in the rubber gasket that seals front-loading machines closed. Washing machines need to be cleaned too, so you need to disinfect regularly.

You can use the same solution or laundry additive to prevent mold by running the washer (without laundry) normally, setting it to full load using hot water. This can clean the machine’s drum wall easily.

You can also use vinegar to remove bacteria. Spray some inside the drum and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Then get a brush and scrub the entire drum wall. Clean the rest of the area with vinegar and wipe clean with a dry and clean cloth.

You use too much detergent.
Many people think that the more detergent they use, it’s better for their clothes to come out clean and smell pleasant. However, too much detergent can cause the buildup of suds and bubbles that can trap bacteria in your clothes.

If your clothes are made of synthetic fabric that does not breathe or dry quickly, it is more likely that sweat and bacteria are trapped within the cloth fibers. When you use too much soap, the bacteria will not wash off and instead get trapped deeper in the fabric.

It’s best to use less than the recommended amount of soap when doing the laundry, and instead add a cup of vinegar or laundry additive. These can break up bubbles and suds, and allow bacteria to wash off your synthetic fibers quickly so that clothing rinses clean with every wash.

Not using the right settings for your laundry.
Once you clean your machine, you still need to use the right settings to prevent mold and mildew from growing, especially if you have clothes that have been left in the wash for a long time.

Separate these fabrics from your other clothes, so the smell will not spread to the other fabrics. Then separate your laundry by fabric and wash them according to the instructions on their tags. Always use the recommended amount of detergent, or use less when you want to use additives.
